Paul Allen was the worst one for me.... was one of us... FA cup hero...just had a brilliant season... and then fucks off to a team that were no better than us at the time... proper pencil through the heart that was

You could also argue it took five seasons to recover from the Cottee sale, had no-one to score the goals at the top level.

Always sad when the star players at the time move on and its west ham so they always did, are and will.
David Unsworth was one I was sad to see go, he was superb for us.
Thomas Hitzelberger was another that shouldve stayed longer

Miike,I KNNNOOOOWWWW!
Thing is, for me, was around then I left London. So, even if no more regular trips to Upton Park I was genuinely excited about our future.

If pushed, it's looking at the SQUAD around 1999-2000 that is probably the most irksome.
Rio, Carrick, Joe Cole, Lampard Jr, Defoe. Intertoto then UEFA Cup, and potential to have been one of the great ENGLISH WHU teams. With a dose of Parlo madness.
How the hell did we fuck that up so badly? (I know.)

Macavennie and Dicks were hard to take but I was probably most gutted when we lost Stuart Slater.
Selling John Hartson was irksome more because Wimbledon bought him for more than we'd ever paid out for a player at that time

I know they all returned but Cottee, Mcavennie & Dicks leaving hit me hard
others that I was sad to see go were Ward, Dickens, Rieper, Bilic, Unsworth, Michael Hughes, Danny Williamson, Rio, Sinclair, Berkovic & Yossi
there's probably more

I was always miffed we didn't sign porfirio - he was great!
I could also never understand why Harry didn't play Michael Hughes more - I was annoyed when he left
Otherwise the big ones for me, not counting those whom jumped ship after relegation, were bilic, then unsworth (stupid wife) and Rio. Every time it looked like we were building a good team it got dismantled

To be fair to Chigwell's OP, Ashton didn't leave for another club. Others did, but weren't particularly more "successful". Plenty were though, it's hard not to be. There's 100s.
I'm not going to state the bloody obvious.
RELATED. Joe Cole is on Talksport now, soon to talk about "current situation at West Ham". If anyone cares.

Smartkev I remember going up to Edinburgh when he had signed for Celtic.I boasted to a Celtic fan that he'll be back at West Ham soon enough. He wasn't best pleased,I kept bumping into him and reminding him of the fact. Eventually he tried throwing his beer over me,missing me. Must of hurt to do that...
